Blog 0014 Old Dubai, Boat, Souk, Frame.

Day 23 of 102. Thursday 2nd February 2023

I certainly bit off more than I could chew today with two shore experiences booked almost back to back. 90 minutes should have separated the end of one trip from the beginning of the next. Traffic conditions in Dubai reduced that to around 40 minutes, during which I needed a spot of lunch and a quick lie down before “starting again.” In the end, I just did the one trip which was most enjoyable. Annoyingly, my sleep patterns (if there are such things) are all over the place, and last night, I managed just three hours! I hope that I can soon be more settled as the voyage enters its second segment, Dubai to Singapore.

Our first stop was in the old area of Dubai, a portion of which came across as devoted to visitors.

We weren’t there too long, but one would need to stay for some time to become more acquainted with this traditional part of Dubai. We continued by coach and boat to the Spice and Gold souqs, which I had no interest in until I was informed later that I could have bought a 24-carat cover for my phone!

We were assured that the precious metals and gems on offer were authentic.

Inside the Frame

Eventually, we had a long and complicated journey to the Dubai Frame. 150 metres high, 90 metres wide, the Frame looks like (at a distance) a pointless rectangular structure. Inside, however, typical Arabian high-tech displays adorned the walls with images of Arabian culture, and an ambitious look into the future. Soon, we were in the elevator, heading 150 metres to the top in under a minute.

The drive back to Queen Mary 2 had us back around 50 minutes late, but because I had slept badly the previous night, I was far too tired for another five hour trip, even with food included. Reluctantly, I returned to my stateroom for some mid-afternoon shut-eye. I felt revived after an hour or so and continued resting on a sunbed on Deck 13. I had dinner alone in the Britannia Restaurant. For a second night, I marvelled at the sight of the Dubai backdrop of high-rises, the Dubai Wheel, and a procession of highly illuminated tourist boats, belting out Arabian (?) disco music, as well as the vessel which refuelled Queen Mary 2 in readiness for continuing its World Voyage.

Bunkering QM2

I have tried to stay up until departure at around midnight. I doubt I shall see Dubai again, especially like this…for a second night.

Right now, it’s two minutes to midnight. I won’t be up for much longer.

Many thanks for reading, David 23.59 at the midnight buffet!
