I have an abiding memory from Cruise No. 2 of November 1989. I was on my second QE2 voyage to the Canary Isles in November of that year. We were docked at Funchal, Madeira, just as today. I looked across at the backdrop of dramatic hillside and many thousands of buildings reaching almost to the summit of the mountains. As the sun set over the horizon, and Cunard’s Vistafjord (later Caronia) disappeared on its way to Barbados, the hills behind the harbour darkened as the lights in most of the buildings, brought the backdrop back to life, something as spectacular as Blackpool Illuminations.
The same happened tonight, 38 years later. Here are some pictures which might illustrate what I’m trying to portray.
